This year, commemoration of the Crossing of the Catawba was shifted from February to May in hopes of finding better weather. We gathered at Rural Hill Farm in Huntersville, NC on May 19th and 20th under clear skies and temperatures in the seventies to contrast with last year’s drizzle and sleet. We reenacted the Crossing of the Catawba on Saturday and the Battle of Weitzell’s Mill on Sunday. The core of the British troops was the Major’s Company of the 64th Foot, supplemented by a couple of us from the Guards, a couple from the 33rd Regiment, and about six soldiers and a couple of officers from the 7th Regiment. Our collection of redcoats did the Guards proud in commemorating their dispersal of the North Carolina Militia on Saturday.

British and Rebels convened after the battle for a barbecue dinner on Saturday night. Our Jaeger sharpshooters entertained the British camp after dark by providing a light show created by shooting light sticks from their rifles. Attendance by the public was down from last year in spite of the good weather, but the site was excellent and the organizers provided first class treatment for the reenactors, making it a very enjoyable event despite the smaller crowds.
